Digidesign Brings Virtual Instrument Technology and Musical Star Power to NAMM

Company to debut Pro Tools synthesizer plug-ins and team with Dell, Intel, and Microsoft to host star-studded performance series

Avid Technology, Inc.  today announced that its audio division, Digidesign®, will debut two new virtual-instrument plug-ins for its Pro Tools® digital audio workstation platform at the NAMM Show, scheduled for January 19-22 at the Anaheim Convention Center. In addition, Digidesign and its M-Audio® business unit – along with co-developers Dell, Intel, and Microsoft – will host a series of live performances featuring multi-platinum rock act the Goo Goo Dolls; pop star Kelly Clarkson with her musical director Jason Halbert; Fred Martin and the Levite Camp of the Urban Entertainment Institute with special guests Jackson Browne and Faith Evans; acclaimed drummer Omar Hakim; and electronic music producers BT, Junkie XL, Z-Trip, The Crystal Method, among many others.

“We’re looking forward to one of our most action-packed NAMM shows ever,” said Digidesign general manager and Avid vice president Dave Lebolt. “With the recent introduction of Pro Tools 7 software, we added a slew of enhanced MIDI features with new looping, arranging, and composition tools. Now, with our new software instruments, we’re delivering tightly integrated virtual instruments within Pro Tools, and NAMM is the perfect forum to introduce these new plug-ins. In addition to our normal exhibition, we are also offering hands-on Pro Tools 7 training so customers can experience our latest music creation tools first hand. We’re also excited to be joining forces with Dell, Intel, and Microsoft to bring some of today’s top hit-makers in for live performances mixed through our VENUE live sound system.”

Digidesign will kick off its new line of virtual instruments with Xpand!™, a free plug-in that allows users to access and manipulate thousands of high-quality sounds directly from within Pro Tools; and Hybrid, a $249 U.S. high-definition synthesizer plug-in that combines vintage analog sounds with a full range of 21st century digital capabilities. Xpand! and Hybrid were both developed by the Advanced Instrument Research group, a unit that Digidesign created from its recent acquisition of Wizoo, a German developer of virtual-instrument technology. Both products will be on display at the Digidesign and M-Audio booths (6606 and 6700, respectively).

The Digidesign hosted musical performances will take place in a small venue called The Show Room, and they will feature a wide variety of M-Audio interfaces, controllers, microphones, monitors, and more – including ProKeys88, Trigger Finger, Aries, and Solaris™. The Show Room performances will be mixed on the Digidesign VENUE live sound console by Robert Scovill, award-winning live-sound engineer for major rock acts including Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Matchbox Twenty, and Rush.

In addition to unveiling its new virtual-instrument line and hosting The Show Room performances, Digidesign will demonstrate a Pro Tools|HD 3 Accel system with an ICON D-Command™ console running on a Dell Precision 670 Workstation, and M-Audio will showcase a Pro Tools M-Powered™ system with an Ozonic™ keyboard running on a Dell Precision M70 Mobile Workstation. Digidesign will also hold a series of one-hour hands-on training sessions on how to get started using Pro Tools 7 software for Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional.
