Magellan’s handheld Explorist 100 Review

Magellan’s handheld Explorist 100 is an inexpensive unit. At around $100 dollars, this small but efficient GPS is great for hiking, backpacking, camping, etc. It lets you save up to 3 track log files, 500 points of interest and 20 routes to guide you back to your favorite spots. It does not come preloaded with maps, POI’s etc. So if you need to install maps, then a more expensive unit will be in order. The Explorist 100 is a great unit for the price.

The satellite lock is fast and impressive. You can even lock in indoors. The large LCD screen is easy to view. The menus are clear.

Features include a one button shortcut to key features and a joystick controlled TrueFix technology. Accuracy is reliable to within 3 meters. It funs on two AA batteries and lasts for up to 18 hours of continuous use. Great for backpacking or camping.

The case is build to last, rubber armored impact-resistant plastic, with a water-resistant seal. And at 2.2″ W x 4.7″ H x 1.3″ D and weighing only 5.8 ounces, with batteries, it fits very comfortably inside your hand. It’s also made to fit in either the left or right hand, so its very comfortable to use. And ease of use one of the best.

Operates with 10 different languages, and it comes ready to use when you get it. And it holds 75 grids, including Lat/Lon, UTM, OSGB,MGRS, Finnish, German, Swedish, French, Irish, Swiss, USNG, 1 User Grid (76 Max).

Overall the Magellan Explorist 100 is a good device for the price, if you’re looking for something to take with you on wilderness trips, backpacking, hiking, even white water rafting. It’s rugged and reliable, and for around $100, worth every penny.
